Moon Jar by Debbie Page ceramics Yellowshed Pottery

It is over 50 years since a man first walked on the Moon. Cultures across the World have always been fascinated by the Moon and have referred to it in their art, craft and mythology. The Korean culture has long been a centre of ceramic innovation and excellence; in the mid 17th century they developed the techniques to make large porcelain jars, and we mean large. Initially they had no specific name, however over time the jars came to be known as Moon Jars as they were large and white.

This lovely Moon shaped workshop led by Master Maker Debbie Page of Yellowshed Pottery has been entranced by the Moon Jar since seeing a photo of her pottery heroines, Lucie Rie, photographed next to one, and has enjoyed the challenge of making her own ever since.

In this Workshop…

Suitable for beginners and the experienced alike, Debbie will be showing you 2 ways to make a Moon Jar – pinching and coiling techniques. You can try different ways of finishing the rim and decorate your Moon jars with colour using underglazes. You will have time to make 2-3 Moon Jars.

At the end of the workshop, Debbie will dry the Moon Jars, fire them and then glaze with a transparent glaze. Your Moon Jars will be available for collection approx 4-5 weeks after the Workshop.

Debbie says, “I look forward to meeting you and very much hope you will enjoy the course and ‘catch the pottery bug’ – if you haven’t already caught it!”

Please bring with you to the workshop: All aprons, materials, tools and equipment will be provided, however please bring a small note/sketchbook and a pen or pencil, as you may wish to make a few doodles and notes about your work.

She also recommends you treat yourself to a good quality handcream as the clay and water can be hard on the hands.
